Brief History Of The Internet
The Internet was first created in 1969 by The Department of Defense and utilized by University Scientist to have a means of instantly sharing scientific data across the nation between one and another.
It wasn't until 1984 that the term Internet was even used. Before the name Internet it was called ARPANET which stood for Advanced Research Projects Agency NETwork.
Chat rooms once were just simple bulletin boards which had to be hosted on a PC. In other words, when you wanted to contact someone you had to dial your modem directly to the other computer you wished to chat with.
Along with that drab environment there were no graphics, color, or pictures of any sort on the Internet. Text, text, and more text is all that the Internet had to offer.
In 1993 point and click browsing became available and from there on computers along with the Internet rapidly made the transition from geek item to household item.
In 1995 the National Science Foundation handed over the management responsibilities of the Internet backbones to commercial organizations. From that hand off ISP's were born and now you are reading this while probably downloading a favorite song and looking at a picture of a distant relative (we hope) all at the same time.
Although the Internet backbones are owned and run by commercial organizations, the Internet itself is owned by no one organization. It is a group cooperative effort to maintain the Internet's networks.
Internet Basics
ISP stands for Internet Service Provider. An ISP offers a connection to the Internet usually for a monthly fee, although some ISP's charge by usage or a maximum ceiling.
All ISP's are the same as far as connecting you to the Internet, however ISP's differ in their offerings to you. Some come with extra software to enhance your Internet experience or automate online modem connectivity. Many ISP's add reading content (news, sports, forums, chat rooms, etc.), links to popular web sites and graphic advertisements.
DSL means Digital Subscriber Line. DSL was created in 1989 originally
designed for transmitting video and television signals for video on
demand. However, the application found it's real purpose as another
means for Internet access and hasn't changed since.
DSL is a dedicated line used for accessing the Internet at high speeds which has earned it the alias, High Speed Internet. DSL services often use a splitter which allows the use of voice and data over the same line.
