The Best Checking Accounts of 2026, Six Picks by What You Need

Six checking accounts compared by monthly cost, ATM access, interest and sign-up bonus. Terms read October 13, 2026.

No single checking account is right for everyone. These six each come out on top for one job: a low monthly cost, a sign-up bonus, ATM reach, interest, overdraft cover, or a teen's first account.

Three of them list no monthly charge at all: SoFi, Axos ONE and Quontic. Chase Total Checking can run $15 a month unless you meet one of its waivers.

We read every account below on its bank's own site on October 13, 2026. Banks change rates, charges and bonuses without warning, so check the bank's page before you apply. If a monthly cost is your only worry, start with the bank promotions list and sort by what an account costs to keep.

Key takeaways
  • SoFi pays up to $400 and Chase Total Checking pays $400. Chase wants $1,000 in direct deposits within 90 days, SoFi wants $5,000 within 25.
  • Quontic High Interest Checking pays 1.10% APY, but only in a statement cycle with 10 debit purchases of $10 or more.
  • Current's $75 needs code WELCOME75 and $1,500 in direct deposits.
  • Chase High School Checking pays a teen $125 for 5 transactions and costs $0 a month for ages 13 to 17.
  • Any bank bonus is taxable income.

The six checking accounts

Each account here wins one category. None of them wins everything, so read the catch under each before you pick.

1. SoFi Checking and Savings

Most perks, nothing monthly
Sign-up bonusUp to $400
Monthly cost$0
Minimum to openNone
ATM access55,000+ Allpoint ATMs
What you do$5,000 or more in direct deposits within 25 days
Offer endsFirst direct deposit by December 31, 2026. Read October 13, 2026.

SoFi says it charges no account, service or maintenance fees on Checking and Savings. There's no minimum balance either, and the 55,000+ ATMs in the Allpoint network don't cost you anything from SoFi.

The bonus comes in tiers. Direct deposits of $5,000 or more in the 25 days after your first one pay $400. Between $1,000 and $4,999.99 pays $50, and anything under $1,000 pays nothing. SoFi sends the money within 7 business days.

Here's the catch. There are no branches, and $5,000 in 25 days is a lot if your paychecks run small. Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, bank transfers and tax refunds don't count as direct deposits.

Steps: open it online, point your paycheck at it, and use the Allpoint ATMs.

Bonus: $400 for $5,000.00 or more in Eligible Direct Deposits within 25 calendar days of your first one, $50 for $1,000.00 to $4,999.99, first deposit by 12/31/2026. Paid within 7 business days. See SoFi for the full terms. SoFi Bank, N.A. Member FDIC.

2. Chase Total Checking

Lowest bar for $400, plus branches
Sign-up bonus$400
Monthly cost$15, or $0 with a waiver
Minimum to openNone listed
ATM access14,000+ ATMs, 5,000+ branches
What you do$1,000 in direct deposits within 90 days
Offer endsJanuary 27, 2027. Read October 13, 2026.

Chase wants $1,000 in direct deposits inside 90 days. That's the lowest bar for a $400 bonus on this list, and it's the only bank here with real branches.

The deposits can come from more than one paycheck. Chase says it pays within 15 days once you've finished.

The monthly charge is $15 unless you hit a waiver, and there are four: $500 or more in electronic deposits, a $1,500 balance at the start of each day, a $5,000 average balance across linked accounts, or a linked qualifying checking account.

The catch: it's for new Chase checking customers only, and Chase gives one new checking bonus every two years.

Steps: open the account with the offer, send $1,000 in direct deposits, wait for the bonus.

Axos lists no monthly maintenance charge, no minimum balance and no overdraft charge on Axos ONE. It also has the widest fee-free ATM network of the six, at 95,000+.

ONE is a checking and savings pair, so you open both. Checking earns 0.51% APY in a month with $1,500 in qualifying direct deposits and a $1,500 average daily balance. Miss that and it earns 0.00%. Rates are variable.

The catch: the checking rate is close to nothing, and there's no cash bonus on this account.

Steps: open the pair online, move your direct deposit for early pay, and use the 95,000+ ATMs.

Axos lists no monthly maintenance fees, no minimum balance requirements and no overdraft fees on Axos ONE. Checking earns a base rate of 0.00% APY and a promotional 0.51% APY for a statement cycle with $1,500 in qualifying direct deposits and a $1,500 average daily balance. APY accurate as of 10/13/2026 and variable. Bank products and services are offered by Axos Bank, Member FDIC.

4. Quontic High Interest Checking

Minimum to open$100
ATM access90,000 surcharge-free ATMs
What you do10 debit purchases of $10 or more each statement cycle
Offer endsNo bonus date. Read October 13, 2026.

Quontic pays 1.10% APY on every balance tier in any statement cycle with 10 debit card purchases of $10 or more. That's the highest checking rate of the six.

Skip the 10 purchases and the account pays 0.01%. Quontic says it has no monthly fees and no overdraft fees, and you need $100 to open it.

The catch is that $100 minimum, and that the rate depends on how much you swipe your card. Rates can change without notice.

Steps: open it online with $100 or more, make the 10 purchases, and earn the rate for that cycle.

What you doCode WELCOME75, then $1,500 or more in direct deposits within 35 days
Offer endsNo end date listed. Read October 13, 2026.

Current is the one pick here with fee-free overdraft. Current says you qualify once you've received $200 or more in eligible direct deposits over the previous 35 days, plus a few other requirements it decides.

The $75 bonus is separate and asks for more. You enter code WELCOME75 at sign-up, then get $1,500 or more in eligible payroll deposits in the first 35 days. Skip the code and the bonus doesn't show up.

The catch: Current isn't a bank. It's a financial technology company, and its banking comes from partner banks, so deposit insurance works differently (more on that below).

Steps: sign up with the code, set up payroll deposits, and reach $1,500.

6. Chase High School Checking

Sign-up bonus$125
Monthly cost$0 for ages 13 to 17
Minimum to openNone listed

What you do5 qualifying transactions within 60 days
Offer endsJanuary 27, 2027. Read October 13, 2026.

This is Chase's first checking account for teens aged 13 to 17, and it pays your teen $125. No direct deposit is needed. Your teen just makes 5 qualifying transactions within 60 days, such as debit card purchases, Zelle, ACH credits, Chase QuickDeposit or online bill payments.

A parent or guardian co-owns the account, needs an eligible Chase checking account, and has to be at the branch when it opens. Your teen brings two acceptable forms of ID. Chase pays within 15 days of the fifth transaction.

The catch: you can't open it online. Chase emails you an offer code, and you take it to a branch.

Steps: get the code by email, open the account in a branch together, and have your teen complete the 5 transactions.

How to choose a checking account

Start with how your money moves, not with a bank's name. Ask yourself three things. Is your paycheck going to land here? Will you ever need a branch or to deposit cash? Will the balance stay high enough for interest to matter?

A paycheck makes direct deposit the key that unlocks the extras. That covers the bonuses at SoFi, Chase Total Checking and Current, plus early pay and overdraft cover. If a day or two of payday timing matters to you, compare banks that pay early.

Handle cash or like talking to a banker? Chase has more than 5,000 branches. If you never go inside one, you can skip that and stick with online banks.

Interest on checking is small and usually has strings. Quontic pays 1.10% APY only in a cycle with 10 debit purchases of $10 or more. Money you won't touch this month earns more in a high-yield savings account, where the rate doesn't depend on swiping a card.

Checking account charges to watch

Everybody looks at the monthly charge. Chase Total Checking is the one here with a $15 monthly charge, and it goes away with any one of four waivers, including $500 or more a month in qualifying electronic deposits. SoFi, Axos ONE and Quontic list none, and Chase High School Checking is $0 for students 13 to 17.

Overdraft is where accounts differ the most. Axos ONE lists no overdraft charge, and Quontic says it doesn't charge one. Current offers fee-free overdraft once you meet its direct deposit requirement. At Chase, no overdraft charge applies if you're overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the business day. SoFi offers overdraft coverage to accounts that get $1,000 or more in eligible direct deposits within a rolling 31 days.

Out-of-network ATMs are the other trap. SoFi warns that third-party ATM charges can apply outside the Allpoint network, so stay inside your bank's network when you can.

How checking account bonuses work

A bonus is the bank paying you for your direct deposit. You open the account, a set amount has to arrive in a set window, and the bonus shows up afterward.

The amounts and the windows are what differ. Chase pays $400 once direct deposits hit $1,000 within 90 days. SoFi pays $400 for $5,000 or more within 25 days, or $50 for $1,000 to $4,999.99. Current pays $75 with code WELCOME75 after $1,500 in eligible payroll deposits in the first 35 days. Chase High School Checking is the exception, paying $125 after 5 transactions in 60 days with no direct deposit at all.

Two things trip people up. A transfer from your own account at another bank doesn't count as direct deposit at SoFi or Chase, so the money has to come from an employer, a payroll provider or a government payer. And the bonus is taxable income. Chase reports its bonus on Form 1099-INT, and SoFi says its bonuses may be reported on Form 1099-MISC. For the IRS side, see IRS Topic 403.

No paycheck to move? Some banks pay for balances instead, and the bank promotions list has them.

What FDIC insurance covers

FDIC insurance covers up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category, if the bank fails. SoFi Bank, JPMorgan Chase Bank, Axos Bank and Quontic Bank are all FDIC members.

Current works differently. It isn't a bank. Its banking services come from Choice Financial Group and Cross River Bank, which are FDIC members, and pass-through coverage only applies when certain conditions are met. The insurance protects you if the partner bank fails, not if the app company does.

How we picked

We compared monthly cost and how to get it to $0, minimum to open, ATM and branch access, interest and the sign-up bonus. An account made the list by being the strongest of its group at one of those. See how we check rates for the wider method.

On October 13, 2026 we read each account on its bank's own pages. One thing doesn't come from a public page: Current's $75 bonus and its code are from Current's partner program terms.

We don't score or rate banks. You get the numbers, and every source is listed at the bottom of the page.

For most paychecks, Chase Total Checking, at $400 for $1,000 in direct deposits within 90 days. Yes, for five of the six. SoFi, Axos ONE, Quontic and Current open online or in an app, and Chase Total Checking opens online or in a branch. Chase High School Checking is the exception, since it opens in a branch with a parent or guardian using an offer code Chase emails you.

Banks screen applicants with reports from agencies such as ChexSystems, which track unpaid balances and accounts closed for cause. Being denied at one bank isn't the same as being denied everywhere.

Yes. None of these offers asks you to close another account. Open the new one, move your direct deposit, and close the old one only after your bills and subscriptions have followed.

How old do you have to be?

Chase High School Checking is for ages 13 to 17 with a parent or guardian as co-owner. Quontic says you must be 18 or older to open its account.
