Dedicated T1

A full dedicated T1 connection consists of 24 data/voice channels. T-1 line channels are run along two pairs of either copper, fiber, microwave (wireless), or infrared transmissions. These channels are carried digitally or optically through what is called a "channel bank" which decodes the signals into analog.

One important aspect of dedicated T1 long distance connection is the interopability of information needed to receive all the data/ voice channels at the same time.

The process that makes a DS1 line interoperability is called multiplexing.

Multiplexing compresses the voice channel information without altering the information itself allowing large data/call volumes to travel together on the same T1 line and end-user network paths.

Multiplexers are placed in long distance companies, local carrier companies and the subscriber's premises. Multiplexers must match for the information to be integrated properly for a T-1 connection.

An example of multiplexing might include 24 different call centers in a building receiving and sending 24 different phone calls simultaneously.

Sometimes a full T-1 is not necessary or too expensive for a smaller operating company with only two phones for a call center and a few Internet connections. Some company's requirements never reach the full bandwidth of 1.54 Mbits . When this situation occurs, fractional services become the option.

Fractional T1 is sold in 2 channel increments. So if a full dedicated line offers 24 voice or Internet channels at 64 Kbps then the first low cost option for a fractional connection would be 128 Kbps, equivalent to two 64 Kbps channels. If a company requires fractional Tier 1 services exceeding 6 integrated channels ( 12 T-1 channels at 64 Kbps per channel) the cost then equals, and in some cases exceeds the cost of a full dedicated DS1 making a fractional buy not the best option. Small businesses and offices with a few voice and Internet lines will more than likely find fractional Tier 1 a practical choice for their Internet and call center needs.

Integrated Tier 1 is used for sending voice, video, data or digital packets. Another similar service is ISDN which means Integrated Services Digital Network. The benefits of ISDN include high quality voice through digital connectivity, switched service for local and long distance calling times, out-of-channel signaling which uses all channel bandwidth for voice and data, and a standard interface which enables communication capability between ISDN users.

Integrated and ISDN hold many physical similarities with the exception of the 24th line on a PRI (Primary Rate Interface) ISDN. The 24th line on a PRI ISDN is reserved for out-of-band signaling. Via T1 circuits, the signaling is carried within the channels along with the digital data such as caller ID information. PRI ISDN does not require bearer channel capacity for signaling on the line and is installed on the trunk side of a PBX or multiplexer.

DS1 can be configured for many Internet and voice call center applications and uses.
