T3 Internet Basics

A full DS3 connection consists of 672 Internet data or voice channels. These channels are run along optical fiber. The reason T3 doesn't run along two pairs of either copper, fiber, microwave (wireless), or infrared transmissions is because of the hefty load of bandwidth in the line needed for reliable transmission.

One important aspect of a T-3 line is the seamless integration of information often needed to receive all the voice/data channels at the same time. The process that makes this possible is called multiplexing.

DS3 multiplexing compresses the data/voice information without altering the information itself allowing large call and data volumes to travel together on the same line and end-user network paths. Multiplexers are placed in long distance companies, local carrier companies and the T3 subscriber's premises.

Multiplexers must match for the information on the T-3 to integrate properly. An example of DS3 multiplexing might include 672 data centers in a building receiving 672 different Internet transmissions at one time.

An Integrated connection is used for sending voice, video, Internet data and/or digital packets.

Fractional T-3 is a cost effective purchase option for subscribers not capable of utilizing the full bandwidth of traditional T-3.

The fraction purchased for a T3 line usually does not exceed more than half the DS3 or the purchase is no longer at a savings to the subscriber.
